Airstream Dream

Welcome to the startup site of Airstreamclub.co.nz.

Dream a little, it might just come true!

We recently fulfilled our ultimate dream of owning an Airstream caravan.

Our first attempt was when we bought our very first caravan back in 2010 – a really old retro one that needed plenty of restoration; although we painted her in silver, she was still not a real Airstream by any stretch of the imagination!

In September 2013, a rare opportunity came up when we found a brand new Airstream available for purchase in Pauanui, New Zealand. We were so excited at the prospect of finally fulfilling our dream, and it didn’t take long for us to take the plunge!

She was a magnificent 20ft Flying Cloud, and one of three Airstreams (20ft, 30ft & 31ft) offered for sale by Dunbar Sloane – if the name sounds familiar, it’s because the vendor was the grandson of the founder of New Zealand’s oldest auction house.

It turns out that Dunbar went to the same school as Wade Thompson. They were both good mates, taking fishing and skiing trips together as young men. They continued to be close friends throughout life. Sadly, Wade passed away in 2009; in the following year, Dunbar imported three Airstreams into New Zealand as something to remember his good mate by.

At a guess, there are fewer than 100 Airstreams currently in New Zealand, a large percentage of those are vintage conversion into food caravans, and so owning a new one is truly a privilege! We thank Dunbar for his kindness and the opportunity of owning an Airstream – but particularly the personal history that goes with this modern American classic!!
